Have You Met Ted?
Ted Hsu (pronounced “shoe”) came to Kingston with his parents when he was six months old. He attended St. Thomas More and Loyalist CVI, graduating with a BSc in physics from Queen’s, and then a PhD in physics from Princeton University. After working in physics research and finance, and spending a few years as a stay-at-home dad, Ted chose to settle back in Kingston with his wife and two daughters. From 2007 to 2011, Ted was the Executive Director of SWITCH, an association in southeastern Ontario focused on the sustainable energy economy. From 2011 to 2015, Ted was the federal MP for Kingston and the Islands, facing off against the Conservative majority government of Stephen Harper. His signature piece of legislation was a bill to restore the long-form census, a crucial source of information about ourselves to understand our problems and govern wisely. Restoring the long-form census was the first act of the newly elected government in 2015. Ted did not run for re-election because of the burden on his young family. In 2019, Ted was asked by Kingston’s Mayor Bryan Paterson to co-chair the Mayor’s Task Force on Housing and co-authored its report. During this period Ted also coached student robotics, was involved in a biotech startup, and helped care for aging relatives. Ted became MPP for Kingston and the Islands in the provincial election of June 2022. Following that disastrous result for the Ontario Liberal Party, Ted was motivated to seek the Liberal leadership to offer the party a fresh start. During the 2023 leadership race, Ted travelled across Ontario and got to know many of the issues faced by various regions of the province. He is currently the Ontario Liberal caucus critic for Energy and Natural Resources and Agriculture and Rural Issues. Ted is committed to protecting and improving the lives of Ontarians, whether it be fighting to make life affordable, fixing health care, education and housing, advocating for a more productive and inclusive economy, protecting prime farmland, or advancing sustainability and green energy to fight climate change.
